UNPRODUCED PROTOTYPE OF DESERT CONVOY TRUCK

This unproduced prototype of the Desert Convoy Truck vehicle may look exactly like production on first glance but it is actually practically completely different from the version that finally made it into production. The most obvious is the the "canvas" top on the back of the truck is actually made of canvas material. The reason for why this piece was eventually changed to plastic is unknown it can be speculated that a real canvas back would not be as study as a solid plastic back for a children's toy. There might have also other safety issues involved. Another notable difference is that the the truck's grill is different. It would seem Kenner added a separate grill piece so that Indiana Jones could hang on to it for an added play feature. That feature would have been missing if this version had made it into production. The truck's cab has a split window which is more true to the movie but Kenner opted to not to have it in the final version. Other differences include the fact that there is not a single molded piece on this prototype that is exactly like the final production version. Every piece is in some way different from production.

The fact that this piece has survived is amazing and of tremendous value. It gives an interesting look into how many changes pieces often go through before they make final production.
